Building Strong Pathways to Change

Saint John’s Program for Real Change creates pathways to stability and self-sufficiency for some of the Sacramento region’s most vulnerable residents. As the largest residential program serving homeless women and children in the area, Saint John’s combines safe housing with a comprehensive network of services designed to support long-term success.

Through its partnership with the California Workforce Development Board’s Helping Justice-Involved Reenter Employment (HIRE) 1.0 program, Saint John’s has expanded its ability to serve justice-involved women seeking a fresh start. The HIRE program strengthens the organization’s mission to promote successful reentry and reduce recidivism by addressing both immediate needs and long-term career goals.

At the core of Saint John’s approach is stabilization. Upon entry, participants receive housing, meals, and intensive case management, creating a secure foundation from which they can begin rebuilding their lives. From there, they access a wide range of wraparound services, including individual and family therapy, life-improvement classes, childcare, support for high school diploma or GED attainment, and substance use disorder counseling—all delivered in a safe, trauma-informed environment.

HIRE funding has played a critical role in expanding these opportunities.

Once stabilized, participants transition into skill-building and career development. Through hands-on training in Saint John’s social enterprises—Plates Catering and Red Door Desserts—women gain practical work experience while developing confidence and professionalism. Complementary coursework in employability, financial literacy, and life skills prepares participants for long-term success in the workforce.

HIRE funding has played a critical role in expanding these opportunities. Participants have been able to complete industry-recognized certifications and training programs such as the Future Fire Academy, Project Heartbeat (EMT certification), Guard Card training, and ServSafe certifications. The program also removes practical barriers to employment by covering essential expenses like work clothing, transportation, and other job-readiness costs.

The results demonstrate the program’s impact. As of June 2025, Saint John’s had served 92 of its projected 93 participants, with 69 women successfully completing HIRE-supported training. With more than a year remaining in the grant period, the program is on track to exceed its enrollment goals—an indicator of effective program delivery.

Through its partnership with HIRE, Saint John’s continues to provide more than services—it offers a pathway to independence. By equipping women with the tools, training, and support they need, the program is helping participants rebuild their lives and step confidently into quality careers.
