Mentorship and Guidance Drives Change

Ismael’s story is one of determination and a clear commitment to building a different future.

As an 18-year-old from South Sacramento, Ismael grew up surrounded by significant challenges. Raised in a household impacted by substance abuse and gang involvement, he witnessed firsthand the toll that violence, addiction, and instability can take on individuals and families. Rather than follow those patterns, Ismael made a deliberate choice to change his trajectory.

Through Self Awareness and Recovery (SAR), a grantee of the Helping Justice-Involved Reenter Employment (HIRE) program, Ismael found the support system he needed to begin that transformation. SAR, in partnership with the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA) and its Sacramento Works program, provided mentorship, guidance, and access to career pathways that aligned with his interests and strengths.

Ismael committed himself to personal growth, starting with completing high school—an important milestone that set the foundation for his next steps. He then began coursework toward the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification, demonstrating both aptitude and interest in the field of information technology.

Building on that momentum, Ismael enrolled in UEI’s electrician trade program, where he is developing hands-on skills in a high-demand field. His background in IT offers an added layer of specialization, positioning him for broader opportunities within the electrical industry.

Ismael is breaking cycles and creating a foundation for long-term success.

While preparing for his future, Ismael has remained focused and disciplined. He currently works part-time as a landscaper and is on track to graduate in June with his Electrician Training Card. Following graduation, he plans to enter the electrical field as an apprentice, continuing to build a stable and well-paying career.

The SAR HIRE program has served as a critical bridge for Ismael—connecting him to resources, mentorship, and encouragement at a pivotal time in his life. With that support, he is not only gaining technical skills, but also shaping a future rooted in purpose and resilience.

Ismael’s journey reflects the impact of early intervention and opportunity. By choosing a different path and staying committed to his goals, he is breaking cycles and creating a foundation for long-term success.
