Supportive Environments Lead to Real Change

Alina’s journey is a powerful example of how guidance and opportunity can transform potential into purpose.

Self Awareness and Recovery (SAR) connected Alina and other justice-involved youth in Sacramento County to the tools and support they need to build meaningful futures. In partnership with the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA) and a grantee of Helping Justice-Involved Reenter Employment (HIRE) 1.0, SAR provides a strong foundation for participants to explore education and career pathways.

When Alina joined the program, she was searching for direction. What she found was a structured, supportive environment that helped her grow both personally and professionally. With the encouragement of dedicated staff, mentors, and peers, Alina gained confidence, deepened her sense of purpose, and developed critical interpersonal communication skills—key assets for her future success.

Through SAR’s comprehensive services, Alina connected with college counseling staff who helped her explore higher education opportunities. As she reflected on her interests and goals, she identified Political Science as a potential undergraduate major—an important step toward her long-term ambition of pursuing a law degree.

Alina credits the program’s unique environment for her transformation. From mentorship and guest speakers to peer-led group discussions, each component contributed to helping her gain clarity and direction. The program’s goal-oriented approach not only shaped her aspirations but also equipped her with practical tools to achieve them.

Alina credits the program’s unique environment for her transformation.

Today, Alina is moving forward with confidence and a clear vision. She is committed to continuing her education and building a career in the legal field, where she hopes to make a meaningful impact.

Her story reflects the power of second chances—and the importance of investing in young people at pivotal moments in their lives.
