Finding Passion and Creating Real Change
Jenny arrived at Saint John’s Program for Real Change with a clear goal and a determination to follow through. After transitioning from state prison into the organization’s Female Community Reentry Program (FCRP), she was ready to rebuild her life—but unlike many participants, she already had a vision for her future.
While incarcerated, Jenny discovered a passion for working with dogs. Her responsibilities grew into a meaningful connection and a sense of purpose. By the time she entered FCRP, she knew she wanted to become a professional dog trainer.
Saint John’s, a grantee of Helping Justice-Involved Reenter Employment (HIRE) 1.0, provided the structure and support Jenny needed to turn that goal into a reality. Through its comprehensive, trauma-informed approach, the program first ensured Jenny’s immediate stabilization—offering safe housing, meals, case management, and access to on-site services like therapy, life-skills classes, and employment readiness training.
Once stabilized, Jenny began pursuing her career goals. She secured a position at Petco, where she developed foundational skills and gained confidence working with clients and their pets. Her commitment and work ethic quickly set her apart. With continued support and persistence, she advanced to a full-time Lead Dog Trainer role at PetSmart—an achievement that marked both professional and personal growth.
“Saint John’s helped me turn the life I was rebuilding into a future I could truly believe in.”
Jenny also embraced the program’s financial guidance. By consistently saving 75% of her income, she was able to pay off restitution and, for the first time in years, secure her own apartment—an important milestone in her journey toward independence.
Her success reflects not only her resilience and determination, but also the impact of a program designed to address the full spectrum of reentry challenges. Saint John’s provides participants with access to education, childcare, substance use disorder counseling, and hands-on job training through social enterprises like Plates Catering and Red Door Desserts—all within a safe, supportive environment.
Today, Jenny’s story stands as a powerful example of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity and support.
